Serdang, 30 July 2024 - To ensure financial sustainability and academic excellence, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) recently held a town hall session that emphasized the importance of responsibility centers (RCCs) in generating income. This session was led by the Deputy Treasurer, Puan Siti Amira Shukor, who emphasized the need to reduce dependence on government funds by increasing internal revenue streams.

UPM is currently facing major challenges in its financial management, with the university's total expenditure reaching RM1.04 billion. Operating costs and emoluments are the main contributors to this figure, with large budget allocations given to various faculties and departments. Despite having a strong budget, the university still faces deficits, indicating an urgent need for more strategic financial planning.

The town hall also outlined several key initiatives under the "3P" strategy: generation, savings, and productivity. UPM intends to empower existing internal resources, apply for grants, and launch new initiatives to increase revenue. Among the projects that are expected to contribute significantly to the university's income are Farm Fresh@UPM and collaboration with external organizations.

UPM's financial sustainability is now challenged by a reduction in government grants, requiring innovative solutions in revenue generation. The university's leadership is now focused on optimizing the use of assets and increasing cost efficiency, while seeking to increase income through academic programs and endowment efforts.

As UPM navigates these financial challenges, the commitment to maintaining academic excellence and operational efficiency remains at the top of the agenda.
