UPM FOOD SECURITY CARNIVAL: ADDRESSING NATIONAL FOOD SUPPLY ISSUES

SERDANG, June 7, 2024– Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) organized an inspiring Food Security Carnival to tackle the pressing issue of national food supply sufficiency.

Launch of the Food Security Blueprint. The event garnered significant attention with the presence of the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Haji Mohammad Sabu, alongside the Minister of Higher Education, Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir. Both ministers launched the Food Security Blueprint at the Grand Hall, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Cultural and Arts Centre (PKKSSAAS), UPM. This blueprint represents a strategic plan to ensure the stability of Malaysia's food supply.

 

Forum on Agriculture for the People (PUTRA)

A forum titled "Agriculture for the People (PUTRA): UPM Nurturing Agriculture and Food Security" was also held. This forum aimed to discuss current issues related to agriculture and food security, aligning with UPM’s aspiration to become a key reference center in this field.

The forum was moderated by Ybhg. Prof. Dr. Anjas Asmara @Ab Hadi Samsudin, Director of the Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security (ITAFoS), and featured three prominent panelists:

-Ybhg. Datuk Badrul Hisham bin Mohd, Deputy Secretary-General (Development) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security

- YBhg. Dato' Prof. Dr. Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Putra Malaysia

- Ybrs. Encik Mohd Khairul Mat Hassan, Chief Financial Officer of Farm Fresh Berhad

 

Engaging Agricultural Exhibitions

The Putra Agriculture Center participated by showcasing various innovative agricultural projects, including:

- Quail Farming Project

- Broiler and Layer Chicken Farming

- Mushroom Cultivation

- Vegetable and Herb Cultivation using Fertigation Methods

Additionally, there were exhibitions on tilapia farming by IPR INTAN and displays of the latest machinery and technology used in agricultural activities. This carnival not only demonstrated UPM's commitment to addressing food security issues but also provided a platform for sharing knowledge and best practices in agriculture. The success of this event highlighted the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders to ensure the nation’s food supply remains secure.
