Serdang, 12 October 2024 – The Putra Empowerment Week for the 2024/2025 session was enlivened by the planting of local fruit trees by 3,598 new students at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), held at the Putra Agriculture Centre. This event was not just an ordinary orientation program but also a step towards reducing the university’s carbon footprint and supporting UPM's Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dr. Arifin Abdu, emphasized the importance of trees as a foundation of life and their role in environmental protection. The students not only learned about planting techniques but also cultivated awareness about environmental sustainability.
At locations such as Bukit Ekspo and Farm 5, they worked together to plant rambutan, mango, mangosteen, and banana trees while exploring the campus's natural beauty. The hands-on experience provided a unique insight into sustainable agriculture and campus life at UPM.
Jiwa Putra 3.0 demonstrated that orientation at UPM goes beyond academic adjustment, focusing on character building and strong community values, fostering students' concern for the environment and society.
