UPM IN PLANT MATERIAL VERIFICATION SCHEME, DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE MALAYSIA

Crop material is an important basic input for crop production in Malaysia. The use of plant material that has been certified will guarantee the purity of the breed and its quality. The production of pure and quality plant material can only be done through compliance with plant material production procedures and the achievement of set standards. In order to realize this objective, the Department of Agriculture Malaysia (JP) has established the Plant Material Certification Scheme (SPBT).

Seeing this importance, the Putra Agricultural Center (PPP) through the Agricultural Product Production and Marketing Division (BPPPP) has taken the initiative by participating in this scheme on 10 March 2015. It has now been more than seven (7) years that the Putra Agricultural Center has been active in the Plant Material Certification Scheme (SPBT). Under the SPBT, competent JP Inspection Officers will certify parent trees and fruit trees that comply with the standards that have been set. Buyers' confidence will increase towards plant nurseries that produce clone seedlings certified by the Department of Agriculture.

This recognition is very important and meaningful to Pusat Pertanian Putra in particular and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in general because this has made UPM the only university that has a bud farm and a fruit plant nursery in a public university that complies with this standard in line with industrial needs. This recognition proves that PPP is committed to dignifying agriculture in line with the wishes of the university and the country.

In conclusion, the collaboration between UPM and the Malaysian Department of Agriculture through SPBT is a good effort that can be benefited by the whole community. UPM's agricultural products, especially fruit tree seedlings, are well-known, the brand is trusted and the authenticity is trusted. With the certification of this scheme, UPM not only became one of the main players in this industry but was also able to establish a partnership with the Malaysian Department of Agriculture as a standard institution in SPBT and myGAP certification in order to dignify agriculture in Malaysia.
